It was in Chikmagalur that the first coffee plantation was established back in the 1600s. Thanks to the favourable climate prevailing in the region around Chikmagalur, coffee plantations started cropping up in and around the area. And before long, the consumption of coffee, especially filter coffee, became widespread throughout South India.
Filter coffee, colloquially known as Filter Kaapi, has since become an integral part of South Indian culture. Despite the rise of newer, more western methods of coffee preparation in recent years, the Indian filter coffee still remains the favourite.
